Age- and sex-based exercise performance for adolescents with Fontan physiology are predictably low, but there are additional significant decreases through adolescence for this population, especially in females. We have established normative exercise values for several parameters for this population which will better identify at risk patients and allow for earlier intervention.

Children and adolescents with moderate or severe CHD and NPD who undergo cardiac surgery incur longer hospital stays and higher charges. Recognizing and addressing the underlying NPDs may be important to improve postoperative progression for children and adolescents with CHD hospitalized for cardiac surgery.

In this pilot study, we have found that pre-catheterisation meetings produce a measurable decrease in patient and family anxiety before a procedure. Discussions of the procedure, angiograms, and three-dimensionally printed cardiac models were the most effective educational tools.

Mobility status, molecular test results, and age at symptom onset are important but inconsistent measures for accurately classifying individuals into DMD or BMD phenotypes. These results have implications for prognosis in newly diagnosed individuals and for classifying phenotype in clinical trials.

Medical records data were used to identify areas in which practice aligns with the care considerations. However, there remains inconsistency across domains and insufficiency in critical areas. More research is needed to explain this variability and identify reliable methods to measure outcomes.

This review outlines the literature on DMD and BMD during adolescence, focusing on clinical presentation during adolescence, impact of living with a chronic illness on adolescents, and the effect that adolescents have on their chronic illness.

This review identified significantly increased hospitalization costs for adults with moderate and high severity CHD who are admitted for non-cardiac medical conditions not associated with concomitant cardiac surgical procedures. Admissions with CHD diagnoses had higher ICU admission rates, longer lengths of stay, and higher mortality for most non-cardiac admission diagnoses. These data will add to our understanding of the economic impact of adults with CHD.

Since the 2004 publication of American Thoracic Society guidelines, there have been few changes in pulmonary clinical practice. Frequencies of respiratory assessments and assist device use among males with DMD were lower than recommended in clinical guidelines. Collaboration of respiratory therapists and pulmonologists with clinicians caring for individuals with DMD should be encouraged to ensure access to the full spectrum of in-patient and out-patient pulmonary interventions.
