Arizona Population Surveillance (APS)

Leveraging EHR data to improve care and expose disparities.

Population Health Surveillance

The Center for Disease Control defines surveillance as ongoing, systematic collection, analysis, and interpretation of health data, essential to the planning, implementation, and evaluation of public health practice, closely integrated with the timely dissemination to those who need to know.  Using electronic health record data, we can estimate the size of a health problem (prevalence), describe the natural history of a disease and detect changes in health practice. The projects are population-based to ensure the data used consider affected individuals from all demographics, geographic and socioeconomic groups not just those with access to specialty care.

Current Projects

Spina Bifida Surveillance across Time And Regions (SBSTAR)

The project aims to increase access of public health and clinical data for spina bifida (SB) by public health and clinical researchers, providers, individuals with SB, and families or caregivers, improve accuracy or efficiency in SB case-finding, reporting, or outcome prediction and improve SB data quality and availability of data for public health decision making.

Arizona Developmental Disabilities Surveillance Program (ADDSP)

Arizona Developmental Disabilities Surveillance Program (ADDSP) conducts public health surveillance of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in 8-year-old and 4-year-old children in Maricopa County. ADDSP data helps us to understand more about the number of children with ASD, the characteristics of those children, and the age at which they are first evaluated and diagnosed.

Tracking the burden, distribution, and impact of Post COVID-19 conditions in diverse populations for children, adolescents and adults (TrackPCC)

Track PCC is a surveillance project that examining the descriptive epidemiology, survival, health outcomes, healthcare use, and racial/ethnic differences in individuals living with post COVID conditions (PCC) that contribute to Long COVID. The project conducts active and passive surveillance.  Active surveillance is done through the Arizona CoVHORT
